Starting New Supplements? Go Slow For Your Dogs Stomach

When you’re caring for a dog with special needs, you’ll do just about anything to help them feel better. That’s why so many dog parents look into supplements that may support joint health, mobility, skin, digestion, or overall wellness.
But there’s one important lesson I’ve learned with Chloe:
Always introduce new supplements slowly.
Even high-quality supplements can upset your dog’s stomach if you add too much too quickly. Every dog is different, and dogs with sensitive stomachs or medical conditions may need even more time to adjust.
Why Start Slowly?
Adding a full serving on day one can sometimes lead to:
- Upset stomach
- Loose stools
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
Instead, begin with a small amount and gradually increase it over several days (or even longer if your veterinarian recommends it). This gives your dog’s digestive system time to adjust and helps you notice if the supplement agrees with them.
As always, talk with your veterinarian before adding any new supplement, especially if your dog takes medication or has an ongoing medical condition.
