As the Fourth of July approaches, my thoughts aren’t on fireworks or celebrations—they’re on Chloe.

This weekend gave me time to reflect on our journey together. Living with a special needs dog means there is always something new to navigate. Recently, Chloe has become much more anxious around unfamiliar noises, and knowing that fireworks are just around the corner has me concerned.

I reached out to her neurologist to ask about trying a different medication to help with her anxiety. Unfortunately, the last medication made her sick, so we’re hoping there’s another option that will be a better fit.

If you have a dog who struggles with loud noises, you’re not alone. While every dog is different, there are a few products that many pet parents have found helpful.

Please remember: Always check with your veterinarian before giving your dog any supplements or starting a new product.

One thing I personally do not recommend is products that use synthetic pheromones. Years ago, I tried one with my Boxer, and the reaction was frightening enough that I stopped using them immediately. Because of that experience, I choose natural alternatives whenever possible.
